Gregory Echenique will get the opportunity to pursue an NBA career: The former Creighton center agreed to play in the NBA Summer League for the Toronto Raptors organization.
The 6-foot-9 Venezuela native averaged 10 points, 6.6 rebounds and 1.7 blocked shots in three seasons with the Bluejays.
Echenique became CU's first Missouri Valley Conference defensive player of the year in 2011-12 and is the only player in program history to earn All-Valley all-defensive team honors three times. Echenique twice was named to the Valley's all-tournament team and earned honorable mention All-Valley accolades following his senior year.
Creighton went 75-26 with Echenique in the lineup, including back-to-back Valley tournament titles (2012 and 2013), the 2012-13 Valley regular-season title and wins in the 2012 and 2013 NCAA tournaments. Echenique spent the 2008-09 season and the first seven games in 2009-10 at Rutgers before he transferred to Creighton.
Echenique has also played at the international level. He played for the Venezuelan national team in the 2009 and 2011 FIBA Americas Tournament, as well as the 2012 Olympic qualifier.
The NBA Summer League will take place July 12 to 22 in Las Vegas. Seven of the last eight NBA rookies of the year have participated in the league. Echenique will report July 9.
