RAPID CITY, S.D. — The Gering Platte Valley Companies senior legion baseball team ran into some solid competition Friday in the first day of the Post 320 Black Hills Classic Tournament.
PVC lost both of its games, falling to Sheridan, Wyo., 13-0 in three innings and then to Watertown, S.D., 11-0 in five innings.
The losses dropped Post 36 to 9-18 on the season.
“It was a very tough day,” Gering assistant coach Danny O’Boyle said. “They were both pretty solid baseball teams, but they weren’t anything we haven’t seen before. It was kind of a disappointing thing.”
The day started off with PVC giving up five runs in the first inning to Sheridan. The Troopers exploded again in the third when Skylar Holwell hit a grand slam that ignited a seven-run inning.
Gering mustered just two hits in the contest, with Taylor Winkler going 1-for-2 and Austin Ferguson going 1-for-1 with a walk.
Watertown supplied plenty of offense in its win, getting nine runs in the second inning and two in the fourth.
Watertown’s Connor Fronsen registered a no-hit effort, going five innings, striking out six.
O’Boyle said that both pitchers PVC faced on Friday were impressive.
“They both had good pitchers on the hill,” he said. “They did a good job of mixing up their fastballs and locating them to our guys’ weaknesses, so I think that was able to keep them in check. We just really didn’t come out and hit the ball, so that was definitely a struggle.”
Gering will try to bounce back in the tournament today when it faces Miles City, Mont., at 3 p.m. and Rapid City Post 320 at 8 p.m.
