CHADRON — The Gering B&C junior legion baseball team had a nice showing Saturday in the first day of the Chadron Tournament.
In the final game of the day, B&C Steel prevailed over Chadron 9-7. Earlier in the day, Gering came up just short against Piedmont (Rapid City), falling 7-4.
In other tournament games, Chadron took down Alliance 9-3, and Alliance topped Piedmont 7-4. The tournament continues today in Chadron.
Against Chadron, Gering led 3-2 after the first inning and jumped ahead 5-2 after two innings. Chadron rallied, scoring two runs in the bottom of the third inning and one run in the fourth to even the score.
After a scoreless fifth inning, Gering scored a single run in the sixth inning and then tacked on three more runs in the seventh. Chadron didn’t let down, tallying two runs in the bottom half of the seventh inning, but it wasn’t enough as B&C Steel held on for the victory.
Gering finished the game with 10 hits and five errors, and Chadron had nine hits and two errors.
Quentin Timblin went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and one run scored to lead Gering at the plate, and Esai Hernandez went 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Brenden Brester went 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Trace Fulk went 2-for-4 with one run scored.
Austin Reynolds picked up the win on the mound, throwing all seven innings, striking out six, walking none, and giving up just two earned runs.
Chadron’s highlights included Jayden Stack’s RBI triple in the seventh inning. In the first inning, Devin Julius’ double scored Jackson Dickerson and Colby Ellis. Chadron tied the game in the fourth inning on a passed ball that scored Xavier Going.
In Gering’s loss to Piedmont, B&C Steel fell behind 3-0 after two innings. Piedmont went up 5-1 in the top of the fifth, but Gering bounced back by scoring two runs in the bottom half of the fifth. Gering scored a single run in the sixth inning, pulling B&C Steel to within 5-4.
Piedmont, however, scored two runs in the top of the seventh inning and held Gering scoreless in the bottom half of the frame to seal the victory.
Gering ended the contest with eight hits and three errors, and Piedmont had five hits and one error.
Brent Barge went 2-for-4 at the plate with one RBI and one run scored, and Hernandez went 2-for-4 with two RBIs.
