You'll find tomatoes, herbs, onions and plenty of other fresh produce at a farmers market.
But what else is in the booths at the Omaha Farmers Market in the Old Market? We scoured the weekly event and found nontraditional, healthy surprises along the way. Read about a few of them here, then look for the items every Saturday between 8 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. through Oct. 19.
This variety of herbal insect repellent, made in Ralston, is a lotion and not a spray. Use the booth's tester so you can try before you buy.
If you need a manicure, you're in luck. This cuticle cream is made with natural oils, butters and beeswax.
Kale, a dark, leafy vegetable, is taking the health world by storm. Try this local variety in salad or bake it with salt, pepper, garlic and olive oil to make kale chips.
Homemade bar soap
The soaps sold at the Adagio Soap Products booth are handmade using natural plant oils, minerals, clays and botanicals. They also have a fragrance collection, scented with perfumes. The bars last as long as those you buy in the store. Adagio Soap Products also makes laundry detergent. A bag of the all-natural product washes 90 loads and is safe for high-efficiency washers.
Olive oil dispenser
Extra virgin olive oil, or EVOO, is touted for its health benefits, namely decreasing the risk of heart disease. Store it stylishly in artistic, handcrafted EVOO glass bottles.
