LARAMIE, Wyo. — Eric Moreno had another superb performance on the mound Monday, and the WESTCO Zephyrs excelled at the plate in a 7-3 win over Laramie, Wyo.
The victory lifted WESTCO’s season record to 23-11.
Moreno, who will play baseball at Lamar Community College this upcoming school year, pitched 8 1/3 innings, striking out nine and walking just one. He allowed only two earned runs on his way to improving his season record to 6-1.
Moreno got plenty of run support from his teammates, who pounded out a whopping 15 hits.
“Eric pitched well, we played good defense with the exception of a couple plays, and we swung the bat pretty good,” Zephyrs coach Mark Moran said. “Overall, it was a good day for us.”
WESTCO and Laramie were originally scheduled to play a doubleheader; however, rain showers caused the teams to play just one nine-inning contest instead.
The game got off to a slow start as neither team scored in the first two innings. However, WESTCO got rolling in the top of the third frame, scoring three runs.
WESTCO went up 5-1 after five innings, and the Zephyrs increased their advantage to 7-1 after seven innings. Laramie added two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning, but WESTCO shut Laramie’s offense down after that to post the win.
Ten Zephyrs recorded at least one hit in the game. Leading the charge was Ty Dunkel, who went 3-for-5 with two RBIs and one run scored. He doubled in the fourth inning and singled in the third and sixth innings.
Beau Lofink was also efficient at the plate, going 3-for-5 with one RBI and one run scored. Ty Benson went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored.
The Zephyrs will look to add to their victory total Wednesday when they host Alliance on Fan Appreciation Night, which will include free food and lots of giveaways. The junior game starts at 5 p.m. and will be followed by the seniors contest.
