Former Husker defensive end cited for assault

Former Nebraska defensive end Cameron Meredith is scheduled to appear Aug. 8 in Lancaster County Court after being cited for third-degree misdemeanor assault. The citation is in connection with a June 16 alley fight in downtown Lincoln. Meredith has not yet formally been charged.

According to witnesses in a Lincoln Police Department report, Meredith was among a group in the alley between 13th and 14th Streets and P and Q Streets that was trying to get into an apartment complex above area businesses.

At around 2 a.m., a group on the roof of the complex started yelling obscenities and throwing items at the group below. The roof contingent went into the alley, and a fight eventually ensued. The police were called at 2:09 a.m. and both groups were dispersing by the time they arrived.

The alleged victim, a 20-year-old male, tried to break up the fight, according to the report. He was left with a fractured jaw, fractured orbital bone and a bleeding cut to the back of the head. He was taken to the hospital for treatment. Meredith, the report states, “was later identified as the man who assaulted the victim.”

Meredith, who is out of state, was interviewed and notified of his court date by phone. Police are still investigating the incident. No other citations have been filed against Meredith or others who may have been involved in the alleged fight.

Meredith started 41 games at Nebraska, finishing with 196 tackles and 13 sacks. This is his third non-traffic related case in Lancaster County Court. In March 2011, Meredith pleaded guilty to one count of trespassing and paid a $50 fine. In July 2010, he pleaded guilty to one count of disturbing the peace and paid a $150 fine.
