Hunan Garden, a longtime midtown restaurant, will close this week, with its last two days of operation Friday and Saturday.
The building, at 5916 Center St., has been a restaurant with various owners and formats for about 40 years. Shajing Chen, Hunan Garden's current owner, has operated the restaurant for the last eight years.
Chen says she hopes to reopen the restaurant at a new Omaha location.
The building that houses Hunan Garden is scheduled to be torn down in the next few weeks, said Brian Stavneak, general manager at Petrow's, a restaurant next door. From the 1970s until the mid-1980s the Hunan Garden building was a pizza parlor, then it became a Chinese restaurant, neighbors said.
The property was purchased by Petrow's, which has been in operation for more than 50 years. Petrow's plans to use the space to add a patio and additional parking, Stavneak said.
Hunan Garden will be closed today and open Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.
