A 24-year-old man wanted for attempted murder tried to outrun Omaha police Thursday but instead was caught under a porch in South Omaha.
It was Andrew Brown's second police chase in nine days.
On June 25 he allegedly struck a Council Bluffs police officer with a vehicle to evade police pursuit, which resulted in the attempted murder charge. He abandoned the vehicle not far away and escaped on foot, said Council Bluffs Sgt. Dave Dawson, supervisor of the criminal investigation division. Thursday, however, he didn't get away.
Law enforcement officials started getting tips about Brown's whereabouts late Wednesday night through Crime Stoppers. They finally spotted him driving a silver car about 2 p.m. Thursday.
The pursuit began near 16th Street and the Storz Expressway, covering both highways and city streets and reaching speeds up to 80 mph southbound on Interstate 480. Brown then headed east on I-80, exited at 13th Street, abandoned the car near 17th and B Streets and fled north into an alley.
Neighbors say they heard a loud screeching sound as the car came to a stop with a flattened tire. When they went outside to investigate, police officers told them to stay in their homes.
Within a few minutes, Brown was found hiding under a porch. He tried to flee again but was tackled by a police officer and taken into custody.
Brown was not armed.
A 22-year-old woman who was in the passenger seat of the vehicle also was taken into custody.
Brown had warrants for his arrest for attempted murder, assault on a police officer and first-degree theft stemming from the June 25 incident, which left one officer hospitalized.
Brown allegedly drove a stolen car into a group of Council Bluffs police officers trying to disable his vehicle with stop sticks. Brown hit the officer, who was thrown into a utility pole and landed in a ditch.
Brown was on unsupervised probation for a theft charge. Council Bluffs police said they didn't have a current address for him, but that his previously listed address was in east Omaha.
