The WESTCO Zephyrs senior legion baseball team had another strong showing Saturday in the Walmart Tournament at Cleveland Field in Scottsbluff.
The Zephyrs, who opened the tournament Friday with a 4-0 victory over Cody, Wyo., picked up two more wins Saturday. WESTCO defeated Douglas, Wyo., 5-3 and then turned back the Buckley Bombers (Chappell) 5-1.
In other games Saturday, Cody downed Chappell 17-7, Roosevelt bounced Douglas 6-5, and Cody topped Roosevelt 13-6.
The tournament continues today with four more games. Douglas and Cody will play at 9:30 a.m., and will be followed by Douglas taking on Chappell at noon. At 2:30 p.m., Chappell and Roosevelt will play, and then Roosevelt will face the Zephyrs at 5 p.m.
WESTCO needed to rally late to earn its win over Douglas. Both teams scored a run in the first inning, and then Douglas went up 3-1 after two innings.
The Zephyrs came up big in the bottom of the sixth inning, scoring four runs.
WESTCO finished the game with six hits and one error, and Douglas had nine hits and one error.
Beau Lofink led WESTCO at the plate, going 2-for-3 with one RBI and one run scored. Also collecting hits for WESTCO were Ty Dunkel, Ty Wilson, Austin Murphy, and Robbie Cantril.
Leighton Freeze earned the win on the mound, throwing six innings, striking out five and allowing only one walk. Wilson pitched one inning, striking out one and walking one.
In WESTCO’s win over Buckley, the Zephyrs led 2-1 after the first inning and then went up 4-1 after three innings. WESTCO added its final run in the fifth inning.
Lofink claimed the pitching win, throwing seven innings, striking out 11. Registering hits for WESTCO were Tharyn Curtis, Eric Moreno, Wilson, Dunkel, and Leighton Freeze.
