The Gering B&C Steel junior legion baseball team is heading into its area tournament with a winning record and a wave of momentum.
B&C Steel extended their winning streak to four games Sunday with a doubleheader sweep over Guernsey at Oregon Trail Park in Gering. Gering won the first game 7-3 before cruising to a 13-3 victory in the second contest.
Gering, which has won six of its last seven games, will take a 16-12 record into the Class B, Area 7 Tournament, which begins Friday in Sidney.
“We were able to keep our momentum going, and it’s huge for our kids to be feeling good about the way they’re playing with the district tournament coming up,” B&C Steel coach Patrick O’Boyle said. “Hopefully, we can continue the momentum this weekend.”
While Gering was looking to keep its winning streak going Sunday, B&C Steel also aimed to sharpen its play before the area tournament. O’Boyle was pleased to see his squad accomplish its goals.
“We were looking to just kind of wrap some things up, work on a few things going into district play,” he said. “Obviously, we’re trying to win the ball game, but at the same time, we were trying to get innings in for our pitchers and get some work done with our fielders and hitters, so it ended up turning out to be a very good day for us offensively, defensively and with our pitching.”
In the first game against Guernsey, B&C Steel scored in five of the six innings that they went to plate. After scoring single runs in the first and second innings, B&C Steel increased their cushion with two more runs in the bottom of the third inning.
Gering ended the first game with eight hits and three errors, and Guernsey had three hits and six errors.
Gering used four pitchers in the contest. Esai Hernandez picked up the win, throwing two innings, striking out five, walking none, and giving up just one hit. Brenden Brester also struck out five in two innings.
At the plate, Hernandez went 3-for-3 with three runs scored and one RBI, and Austin Hoffman went 2-for-3 with three RBIs. Logan Conn scored two runs.
For Guernsey, Brady Esquibel went 2-for-2 at the plate.
In the second game, Guernsey jumped out to a 1-0 lead after the first inning, but Gering responded with three runs in the second inning. Guernsey then answered with two runs in the top of the third inning to even the score at 3-3. B&C Steel’s offense then erupted in the bottom of the third inning, scoring six runs.
Gering continued to add to its advantage, scoring one run in the fourth, two in the fifth, and one in the sixth.
B&C Steel finished the game with nine hits and no errors, and Guernsey had seven hits and four errors.
Gering again used four pitchers in the contest. Conn registered the win, throwing two innings, striking out two, walking none, and giving up just two hits and one run. Conner Pickett, Reynolds, and Trace Fulk also saw action on the mound, combining for seven strikeouts and no walks.
Hernandez led B&C Steel at the plate, going 4-for-5 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Brester went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and one run scored. Hoffman scored two runs and had two RBIs.
