COUNCIL BLUFFS — Carly Williamson's final postseason couldn't have started much better.
Her team lost the coin flip, so the Thomas Jefferson senior hit first on her home diamond.
A left-handed slap hitter, she bunted foul twice before launching a leadoff home run to the opposite field to open a Class 5-A Region 8 quarterfinal at City Park on Thursday.
And that was just the start of Williamson's big night. She reached base three more times — on two bunt singles and an infield hit — and stole three bases while scoring four runs.
Oh, yeah. She also tossed a two-hit shutout as the Yellow Jackets blistered Sioux City West 11-0.
Williamson was unaware that her first home run in a T.J. uniform had left the yard. In fact, she sprinted all the way around the bases to start a 14-hit performance by the Jackets.
“It was kind of quiet right when I hit it,” she said. “I didn't even know I hit a home run, so I don't know if it really started much momentum. But the girls hit really well after it, and I think everybody just came to play right from the get-go.”
T.J. (10-19) jumped on the Wolverines (2-22-1) early and never let them in the game. West, 5-A's lowest-scoring team, didn't hit a ball past Williamson until the fourth inning. By then, the Jackets had built a 6-0 lead on RBIs by Vanessa Banderas, Teayanna Leytham and Megan Carroll.
Emily Dickerson and Stephanie Rowland also drove in runs in T.J.'s third win over West this summer.
The Jackets will face rival Abraham Lincoln for the fourth time Saturday. The Lynx won the first three.
“My brother told me before this game that the hardest thing to do is beat a team three times,” Williamson said. “I wouldn't imagine how hard it is to beat a team four times.”
A.L. handled T.J. 8-1 in the second game of the season for both teams. The next two meetings, both in Missouri River Conference play, were much closer. The Lynx won those contests 3-1 and 4-3.
Jacket coach Shannon Stusse said her team will be ready.
“It'll be a good game, and they're a good team,” she said. “It'll be a fight to the end. I think the girls are excited.”
