SIDNEY — The Gering B&C Steel junior legion baseball team scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to rally for a thrilling 3-2 win over Ogallala at the Class B, Area 7 Tournament on Saturday night in Sidney.
After Austin Hoffman scored on an error to tie the game at 2-2, Connor Pickett singled home Quentin Timblin with the winning run with two outs.
The win keeps top seeded Gering in the winner’s bracket of the double-elimination tournament.
Gering will take on Chadron today at 4 p.m. for the right to move into Tuesday’s championship. Chadron, the third seed, shut out Alliance 4-0 on Friday night.
Alliance stayed alive with a 14-4 win over Sidney on Saturday afternoon. The Spartans will face Ogallala in another elimination game today at 1 p.m.
Brent Barge went the distance on the mound to earn the win for Gering against Ogallala. Barge allowed seven hits, walked three and struck out seven in seven innings.
Hoffman led Gering offensively. He went 3-for-3 at the plate and scored two runs. Trace Fulk added two hits, while Barge and Logan Conn each finished with one hit.
Ogallala led throughout the contest after scoring two runs in the top of the second. Gering cut the deficit to 2-1 with a single run in the fourth before the game-winning rally in the seventh.
In its win over Sidney, Alliance exploded for 13 runs in the top of the fifth to overcome a 4-0 hole.
The Spartans finished the game with 12 hits. Colton Rolls went 3-for-3 with three runs batted in and two runs scored. Cody Robinson went 2-for-3 with a double and three runs batted in. Also finishing with two hits for Alliance were Jordon Mills and Gage Rolls. Keegan Barker scored three runs.
Robinson earned the win on the mound. He allowed four runs on five hits, walked three and struck out seven.
Sidney was led offensively by Jason Hagerman, who went 2-for-2 with three runs batted in. Jake Heeren finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored.
Skyler Acent took the loss on the mound for Sidney. He struck out eight in five innings.
On Friday night, Chadron’s Jayden Stack tossed a two-hitter with six strikeouts in a shutout win against Alliance.
The game was scoreless until Chadron finally broke through with four runs in the top of the seventh inning. Colby Ellis and Cody Ray both knocked in runs in the frame for Chadron.
Michael Gieseler led Chadron at the plate by going 2-for-3. Also finishing with hits for Chadron in the game were Jake Bargen and Devin Julius.
Jeff Heusman and Tucker Hall collected Alliance’s hits.
Heusman took the loss on the mound despite a complete-game effort. He allowed just six hits, walked seven and struck out six in seven innings.
