This Sunday, RAGBRAI will roll out of Council Bluffs, Iowa. In its 41st year, the Register's Annual Great Bike Ride Across Iowa has been giving cyclists a chance to greet and meet Iowa from a bicycle seat.
If you are not able to ride it, I invite you to follow me on livewellnebraska.com. I will be sharing daily updates about the ride. Whether it's the food, the people or the weather, I will help you feel, taste and hear the excitement.
Five years ago, I rode in my first RAGBRAI and have participated every year since. Growing up in Iowa, I had often heard about these cycling adventures. I remember thinking how I would be able to climb those Loess Hills or ride into those gale force Iowa winds. When I think of RAGBRAI now, I think about those small towns that greet you with open arms.
It's an experience for everyone. There are kids along the streets who greet you with garden hose showers. There are school groups that are raising money to go on senior trips. It's all about enjoying a little slice of Iowa.
You never know what sort of adventures you might have on RAGBRAI. For me, it was a lifetime love commitment. Four years ago, my then-boyfriend, Kevin, proposed to me on RAGBRAI. We had met on the Keystone Trail. We both shared a passion for cycling, so it only seemed fitting that he should pop the question on a bike. Because when you think about life, love and happiness, it all can be found on a bike.
So this Saturday, ride your bike over to Council Bluffs and check out the latest bike gear at the Bike Expo. On Sunday, hop on a bike and join thousands of riders. All you have to do is ride to the next town. If you can't ride, come out and cheer on those who are.
