Omaha Lancers head coach and general manager Brian Kaufman has tapped a former teammate to be his first assistant coach.
Chris Michael joins the Lancers staff after leading the Chicago Mission to the 2013 Under 16 national championship. During his six seasons in Chicago, Michael helped develop nine players who were drafted by United States Hockey League teams, five NCAA Division I players and three who have been selected in the NHL draft.
Michael and Kaufman were teammates at Miami (Ohio), a relationship that Kaufman said he expects to continue to blossom in Omaha, especially in areas of recruiting and talent evaluation.
“Having played with Chris, there's an inherent trust and familiarity that I think will really help us jell as a coaching staff right off the bat,” Kaufman said. “Chris has spent the last six years relating to younger players and helping them take the next step in their development.”
Michael also is a USHL alum, having played with the Green bay Gamblers from 2000-02 before his tenure at Miami (Ohio).
