Authorities say a 24-year-old Schuyler, Neb., man drowned Sunday night at Fremont Lakes State Recreation Area.
Capt. Tom Christensen of the Fremont Rural Fire Department said the drowning occurred about 6 p.m. at Victory Lake.
Dodge County Sheriff Steve Hespen said Monday that Samuel Hernandez-Lopez was in the water with friends at the lake west of Fremont when the friends said they lost sight of him.
The sheriff said that Hernandez-Lopez had been at the lake with a church group for a baptism. Hespen said Hernandez-Lopez and the friends were in the water after the baptism had ended.
Hernandez-Lopez could not swim, Hespen said, and he was not wearing a lifejacket.
Witnesses told authorities that Hernandez-Lopez was about 30 feet from shore when he disappeared. Hespen said the friends attempted to find Hernandez-Lopez and then called 911.
Christensen said the Fremont Dive Team spent about 20 to 30 minutes locating Hernandez-Lopez's body.
Hernandez-Lopez was taken to the Fremont Area Medical Center, where he was declared dead.
