Westside maintenance workers spent part of the morning Thursday cleaning up blue and white paint at Westside Stadium, including removing it from a stone inscribed with the word “Courage” in memory of the late community leader Liz Karnes.
Westside players touch the stone before they take the field for home football games, which they'll do Friday night against Creighton Prep.
Peggy Rupprecht, a Westside spokeswoman, said the district does not yet know who was responsible for the graffiti, which crews discovered about 11 p.m. Wednesday.
Westside High School administrators are working with those at Creighton Prep to determine who is responsible for the vandalism. “They are using some surveillance video from the field to help them in their investigation,” she said.
Karnes, who died in 2003 after a long battle with cancer, was a longtime member of Westside's school board. A fund in her name, called Liz's Legacy, continues to raise money for cancer research.
