Petrow’s is rolling out its most extensive menu changes in its more than 50 years of business, and the new dishes are available now.
Brian Stavneak, Petrow’s manager, said the restaurant will keep many of its most popular menu items and add some of its customers’ most requested specials. The new menu will also include gluten-free and dairy-free items.
The diner will also be remodeled, and the owners will add outdoor seating.
An all-new breakfast menu will include huevos rancheros, a homemade breakfast burrito, gluten-free pancakes and a malted waffle topped with black walnut ice cream and English walnuts, a dish that won the title of “Nebraska’s Best Breakfast” from Food Network Magazine.
The lunch and dinner menus will now include homemade fried chicken, three new pasta dishes, a homemade three-bean veggie burger and deli sandwiches. New appetizers include a tempura vegetable platter and boneless Buffalo wings.
The restaurant will also introduce new weekend dinner items, including slow-roasted prime rib, whiskey marinated steaks, grilled fish and a full bar of cocktails, premium wells and martinis.

Farmers Market gets national notice
Omaha’s Farmers Market has been named the sixth best in the nation by the Daily Meal, a culinary website that reports on dining news and trends.
The No. 1 market in the nation is Pike Place Market in Seattle; the nearby Des Moines Market took second.
Judging was based on the quality, number and variety of products sold at the market as well as how often it’s open, other awards it’s won and whether it’s a year-round market.
The Omaha Farmers Market is celebrating its 20th year and runs both the Old Market farmers market on Saturday mornings and the Aksarben Village market on Sunday mornings through Oct. 2.

Taita serves sushi on Sundays
Taita is now serving sushi and appetizers on Sunday for lunch.
The restaurant will be open from noon to 4 p.m. every Sunday. The restaurant is in Benson at 6109 Maple St.
Make room for pasta from Sons of Italy
Starting today, the Sons of Italy is again serving its Thursday lunches and Friday night dinners.
The lunch runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the hall, 1238 S. 10th St., and is $8 for a pasta meal and a salad.
Friday dinners run from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. and include whatever was served Thursday as well as fried chicken sandwiches, hamburgers, fries and chicken salad. For more information, call 402-345-4639.
Lot 2 enters local dish challenge
Lot 2 in Benson is participating in this year’s Taste America local dish challenge from the James Beard Foundation.
More than 100 restaurants nationwide are participating in the social-media-driven contest, which asks chefs to create a special dish that represents their part of the country for the chance to win a $10,000 donation to a local charity.
Chef Joel Mahr’s dish is available now. It features a 10-ounce New York strip from Grass Run Farms in Dorchester, Iowa, served with potato confit, and cherry tomatoes, arugula and sweet corn relish from Fulton Family Farms in Villisca, Iowa.
One dollar from every dish sold benefits the Beard Foundation’s Taste America education drive, which helps educate people about the country’s food system. Diners who order the dish at Lot 2 can take a photo of their meal and post it to Instagram with hashtags of #JBFTasteamerica and #Omaha. That could help the restaurant win a donation of $10,000 or 10 percent of the proceeds raised nationally, whichever is higher, to benefit the Food Bank for the Heartland.
The contest continues through Oct. 31. The city with the most Instagram uploads will be the winner.
Long-lived Johnny’s has birthday special
Johnny’s Cafe, 4702 S. 27th St., is continuing the celebration of its 91st birthday with another special.
The restaurant is running a dinner special where diners can get a 12-ounce charbroiled strip steak, a salad and a baked potato for $19.22 — the cafe opened in 1922. The special runs through Sept. 20.
Frank Kawa, the founder of Johnny’s Cafe, opened a seven-seat bar and sandwich counter on the corner of 27th and L Streets in 1922. The third generation of Kawas are celebrating his birthday with the special.

Dante Ristorante is celebrating the return of football season with its $10 Saturday pizza special.
