In a rematch of last year’s Class A state championship, Omaha Marian gained some revenge Tuesday against Papillion-La Vista South.
The host Crusaders boosted their record to 7-3 with a 25-18, 25-19, 25-22 win over the three-time defending state champion Titans. Papio South handed Marian all five of its losses last season, including a three-set sweep in the state final.
“There are a lot of new players on both teams this season,” Crusaders coach Rochelle Rohlfs said. “And a lot of mutual respect for both programs.”
Each squad returned just two starters from last year’s powerhouses, which combined to go 77-6.
Marian sophomore libero Brittany Witt, one of the few returning starters, said it felt good to finally defeat the Titans.
“It was a little bit of payback,” she said. “It was just nice to finally beat that team.”
The Crusaders held the upper hand throughout much of the first set, taking the lead for good at 3-2. That advantage eventually grew to seven, and Marian closed out the set on a kill by Hannah Mueller.
The second set was close until the Crusaders rattled off four straight points to take a 21-15 lead. A kill by Anna Krettek ended the set and gave Marian a 2-0 lead in the match.
The final set was tied 10 times before the Crusaders went ahead 15-14 on a kill by Sophia Terwilleger. Marian went on a 5-0 run shortly after and was on the verge of victory at 24-16 before the Titans battled back.
Papio South staved off match point six times before the Crusaders finally ended it on a kill by Terwilleger.
“That’s something we need to work on,” Rohlfs said. “We need to do a better job of finishing out the match.”
Junior Kelsey O’Connell paced Marian with 10 kills while Mueller added eight and Terwilleger seven. Senior Sydney O’Shaughnessy dished out 30 assists.
Sophomore Raegan Legrand, a freshman libero on last year’s Papio South championship squad, had a match-high 13 kills as an outside hitter.
“We’ve got a young team and we still have a lot of learning to do,” Rohlfs said. “But this was another step forward for us.”
The Titans (5-3) will host Omaha Burke on Thursday night while the Crusaders will return to action Friday in the 16-team Lincoln Public Schools Classic.
