The woman found slain inside her apartment Tuesday was a registered nurse who moved to Omaha just months ago.
The body of Trudy McKee, 43, was discovered by her 16-year-old daughter, who was returning to the apartment near 98th and Q Streets after school. The girl screamed for help, and a neighbor dialed 911.
Early Wednesday, Omaha police arrested Robert W. Grant, 32, on suspicion of criminal homicide and use of a weapon during the commission of a felony in connection with the case. He has a court hearing on those charges scheduled for today.
Grant had appeared before a Douglas County judge Wednesday on a theft of services charge. Prosecutors said he had boarded a Chicago-bound bus without buying a ticket, possibly to skip town after the slaying.
He pleaded guilty to that charge and was sentenced to five days in jail.
McKee's former sister-in-law, Terry Webb of Lawrence, Kan., said she wasn't familiar with Grant. But the family had heard that McKee was dating a younger man whom she had met in Kansas.
Webb said McKee and her daughter had lived in Wichita for years before moving to Omaha about six months ago.
The family has been in contact with some of McKee's Omaha neighbors at the Blossoms Apartments, 9805 Park Drive. The neighbors reported hearing fights between McKee and a man.
Webb recalled her sister-in-law as a caring nurse who gave her in-laws medical advice during family dinners and holiday gatherings.
“She used to help a lot when my mom and sister were sick,” Webb said.
McKee's daughter likely will return to Kansas to live with her father, Webb said.
