One person died and two others suffered minor injuries in a rollover crash Saturday on Interstate 80 in which a second vehicle fled the scene.
A Nebraska State Patrol dispatcher said Juan C. Rivas, 29, died of his injuries at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.
Rivas, a Grand Island resident, was a passenger in a 1994 Ford F-350 pickup truck eastbound on I-80 near Elm Creek when a Dodge pickup truck pulling a stock trailer suddenly changed lanes.
The Ford, driven by Walter Alvarez-Arevall of Grand Island, went into the median while trying to avoid hitting the Dodge, and rolled. Rivas, Alvarez-Arevall, 47, and another passenger, Julio Rivas, 50, also of Grand Island, were ejected from the vehicle.
Alvarez-Arevall and Julio Rivas were treated at the hospital for minor injuries. None of the three men riding in the Ford was using a seat belt.
The driver of the Dodge pickup left the scene and hasn’t been located. The rear of the stock trailer is believed to have been damaged.
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to notify the Nebraska State Patrol in Grand Island at 308-385-6000 or the local police department.
