COUNCIL BLUFFS — Placed in some undesirable positions in the second half, Council Bluffs Lewis Central's defense buckled down and put its team in the best possible spot: 2-0 and atop District 1 of Class 3-A with Harlan.
After the intermission, ADM took 10 snaps in the red zone on three different drives. The Titans pitched a shutout after the break to earn a hard-fought 13-3 victory over the Tigers at Titan Stadium.
“Our defense was just unbelievable,” Lewis Central coach Jim Duggan said. “Coach (Chris Hanafan) and coach (Ben) Matiyow had a great game plan going in, and the kids executed defensively. We were spot-on with what we needed to do defensively.”
After opening the season with three non-district losses by a total of 15 points, the Titans are 2-3 overall and 2-0 in district play. ADM dropped to 3-2, 2-1.
After seeing several drives stopped by penalties in the first half, Lewis Central used two big pass plays to go up by 10. The first came on a well-executed 57-yard bubble screen from Austin Simmons to Jake Rodgers with 10:04 left in the third.
The Titans made it 13-3 with 2:59 left in the third. Simmons faked the bubble screen to Rodgers and the Tigers bit on the fake. Lincoln Rodenburg got behind the defense and hauled in a 20-yard touchdown catch.
After that, L.C. turned it over to its defense. Pass plays of 53 and 21 yards gave ADM a first-and-goal at the Titan 3. But four plays netted minus-4 yards, giving it back to the hosts.
Midway through the fourth quarter, ADM had a second-and-2 at the Titan 19. But after an incompletion, Chris Thomas tipped a Kolby Whisner pass and Mitchell Brinkman picked it off.
Lewis Central fumbled on its next possession and Darold Baker recovered for the Tigers at the Titan 10. Three plays combined to lose three yards, and then Philip Gilman blocked a 30-yard field-goal attempt.
The Titans held ADM to 248 total yards, including just 62 and two first downs in the first half.
Simmons finished 13 of 29 for 151 yards and the two scores, and also carried 22 times for 98 yards. The Titans finished with 317 total yards, 249 coming from Simmons.
“It wasn't perfect offensively, but we scored just enough to win and that's all that matters,” Duggan said.
