SIOUX CITY, Iowa — Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln knocked off three ranked teams while going 5-1 and finishing second at the Sioux City East Invitational on Saturday.
The Iowa Class 5-A No. 10 Lynx suffered their lone setback in a 19-21, 21-14, 19-17 final against 4-A No. 9 Sioux City Heelan. But they added highlight wins against 3-A No. 1 Sheldon (21-16, 13-21, 15-12), 4-A No. 12 CB Lewis Central (21-14, 21-17) and 2-A No. 8 Hinton (21-10, 17-21, 15-10).
Abraham Lincoln also triumphed against Sioux City East (18-21, 21-15, 15-7) and Sioux City North (21-10, 21-12).
“We’re still getting better every day, so that’s a positive,” A.L. coach Brittany Ridenour said. “The girls are playing pretty level, but we just have to learn to close games. We need to start fast and finish strong.”
Heelan also went 5-1 on the day — losing to Hinton — but won the tournament based on its head-to-head tiebreaker over Abraham Lincoln.
Senior hitter Victoria Krohn led the Lynx (27-6) with 51 kills overall, and Delaney Bolton added 34. Libero Bailee Gofta collected 75 digs while Bolton connected on 74.
“We kept on fighting,” Ridenour said. “We need to learn how to close games, but other than that we fought for every point.”
