Dennis Pate is now chairman-elect of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums board of directors.
Pate, CEO and executive director of Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium, was elected Tuesday at the AZA membership meeting in Silver Spring, Md.
Pate came to Omaha in 2009 from Florida's Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens, taking the reins in Omaha after longtime director Dr. Lee Simmons retired.
Pate's resume includes leadership positions at the Lincoln Park Zoo in Chicago and the Oregon Zoo in Portland. In 2010, he unveiled a $174 million master plan for the Omaha zoo that will take 10 to 15 years to completely implement.
After his one-year term as chairman-elect, Pate will become chairman of the AZA board.
