Will this be Alexander Payne's next movie?

UPDATE: Payne has told The World-Herald that "The Judge's Will" is not his next project and that he is unsure what his next project will be.

With his latest film, "Nebraska," rolling out over the next few months, Alexander Payne is lining up another project.

Deadline reports that Payne and Fox Searchlight are in talks to team up for "The Judge's Will," an adaptation of the final published work of Ruth Prawer Jhabvala, the two-time Academy Award-winning screenwriter of such films as "Howard's End" and "A Room with a View." Jhabvala died this April.

The story, which ran in The New Yorker earlier this year, is about an elderly judge in Bombay who tries to see that both his wife and mistress are provided for before he dies.

You can read Jhabvala's full story here.

New setting aside, the story's themes of infidelity, regret and death all seem like a good fit for Payne.

It’s been a long time since Johnny Carson slept in the tiny upstairs room in the modest little house at 306 S. 13th St. in Norfolk.
Carson was born in Iowa and moved to Norfolk with his family in the 1930s. They lived in at least one other house in Norfolk before moving into to the white, wood-frame structure on 13th Street.
