Authorities have released the names of the Omaha area high school students who were involved in a Friday collision that killed one of them and left two others critically injured.
Nathaniel S. LaFave, 15, of Omaha, was killed when the sport utility vehicle in which the Mount Michael student was a front-seat passenger collided with a pickup near Gretna.
The driver, Madeline Shely, 16, and a back-seat passenger, Carly Ann Kelly, 15, were injured, authorities said. They are students at Marian High School.
The accident occurred about 6:30 p.m. at the intersection of 180th Street and Nebraska Highway 370, said Lt. Chris Culler of the Sarpy County Sheriff's Office.
A Dodge 3500 pickup was eastbound on Highway 370 when it collided with the passenger side of a Jeep Cherokee, Culler said. The Jeep was southbound on 180th Street.
It appears that Shely failed to yield to the Dodge, driven by Alan Hynce, 50, of Omaha, Culler said. Both vehicles were found in a ditch.
Shely and Kelly were taken by helicopter to the Nebraska Medical Center in critical condition, Culler said. LaFave was taken by ambulance to that hospital and pronounced dead.
