Two if-needed games provided a nice dose of drama to the final day of play in two Class A district softball tournaments.
After losing 3-2 to Omaha Marian on Thursday, Papillion-La Vista South won two games Friday in the District A-7 tournament at Halleck Park. The 22-11 Titans defeated the Crusaders 5-3 to force the second game, which Papio South won 5-2.
In the A-5 tournament at Lincoln’s Doris Bair Complex, Lincoln North Star defeated Millard West 10-2 to force a second game that Millard West won 9-5.
North Star unofficially earned the lone wild card berth to the Class A state tournament.
Papillion-La Vista defeated Bellevue West 11-2 in the A-1 title game and will be the No. 1 seed, facing Millard West. Emma Dargy had a home run for the 30-1 and top-ranked Monarchs.
Bellevue West advanced to the A-1 title game with a 4-3 win over Omaha Central.
Millard South earned the chance to defend its Class A title with a 9-2 win over Millard North in the A-2 championship game. Lincoln Southeast finished its roll through the A-3 district with an 11-0 win over Bellevue East at Bair. The Knights won their three district games by a combined score of 30-0.
After surviving a scare from Omaha Westside in Thursday night’s second round, Lincoln Southwest hammered out a 16-1 win over Fremont in the A-4 title game, also at Bair. Fremont eliminated Westside 5-1 before the championship game.
Grand Island won District A-6 with an 11-3 championship game victory over Norfolk after the Panthers had eliminated Omaha Benson 3-1 earlier in the day at Grand Island’s Veterans Complex.
In Class B, No. 1 seed and third-ranked York improved to 32-1 by edging defending state champion Lincoln Pius X 7-6 in the B-4 title game at Seward’s Plum Creek Park. Grand Island Northwest rolled through the B-5 district at Hastings with a 14-1 win over Holdrege. Northwest outscored its opponents 27-1 in its three victories.
North Platte will represent District B-6 after defeating McCook 9-1 in the championship. North Platte beat the Bison 3-2 Thursday in the winners bracket.
Elkhorn South and Beatrice earned the wild-card berths in Class B as Norris, Omaha Skutt, Blair and York won the other Class B district titles.
Southern, Wahoo Neumann, West Point GACC, Fillmore Central/Exeter-Milligan, Gothenburg and O’Neill won the Class C district titles. Wahoo and Wayne earned wild-card berths, and Wahoo will be the No. 1 seed at state despite losing twice to city rival Neumann in District C-1.
