Gretna’s dominant run through some of Class B’s best teams continued Friday night with a 42-16 win over Elkhorn South at Antler Stadium.
It was the fourth win over a Top 10 team for the top-ranked Dragons (7-0) as they handed No. 8 Elkhorn South (5-2) its second consecutive loss.
It’s not just that the Dragons are winning, it’s the way they’re winning. Their closest game has been a 19-point margin, and they’ve outscored opponents 267-41.
“I couldn’t be happier with how we’ve played,” Gretna coach Chad Jepsen said. “We’ve played some awful good teams and done a good job with them. I was worried about this game, because Elkhorn South does a lot of things that scare me.”
The District 3 foes battled through most of the first quarter without a score before a bad snap for the Storm found its way into the end zone, where Travis Agagah fell on it for a 7-0 Dragon lead with 48 seconds left.
“We weren’t sure how long it was going to take to find some offense, and getting that score took some of the pressure off,” Jepsen said.
Gretna took advantage of a short field on its next possession, with Nick Stoltenberg finding Derek Templeman for a 37-yard scoring strike early in the second quarter.
The three-headed Dragon ground game featuring Tyler Ballard, Agagah and Connor Shedeed then began to take its toll on the Storm.
Ballard, in his first game back after missing the last month with an injury, rumbled 45 yards for a touchdown to extend the lead to 21-0.
Elkhorn South got on the board on a 51-yard run from Zach Zelasko late in the first half, but second-half scoring runs from Agagah (33 yards), Ballard (2 yards) and Shedeed (25 yards) gave Gretna a 42-9 lead in the fourth quarter.
Ballard finished with a game-high 107 yards on 10 carries, while Shedeed added 49 yards and Agagah 36.
“When we have everybody healthy, we have a lot of weapons,” Jepsen said. “Now we just have to find a way to use them all.”
Stoltenberg added another 129 yards through the air while Zach Reeg accounted for 149 total yards for the Storm.
Gretna hosts Elkhorn next Friday night in another District 3 contest.
