Chris Samples just wants her dinosaur back.
On Oct. 4, she pulled into the driveway at her home in the Dodge House area in Council Bluffs and saw that Rex, a 3-foot tall, 150-pound cast-iron dinosaur, was gone.
“I couldn't believe it,” she said. “Shame on us for leaving him outside, but you don't expect people to steal a 150-pound dinosaur.”
Rex has been in the family for 30 years, belonging to a family member of Samples who has since passed.
“We're sad about this,” she said.
Police continue to search for the stolen statue, which Samples said she hopes might stick out to officers making their rounds in the city – or stick out to anyone, really.
“It's so unusual,” she said. “Hopefully they'll see it while they're out there.”
The Samples family is offering a reward for the safe return of Rex. Anyone with information can call the Council Bluffs Police Department Crime Stoppers at 712-325-7867.
For now, Samples' front yard is missing a part of the family.
“Every time I drive home I think I'll see him there,” she said. “Think that someone will return him.”
