A suspected car thief was taken into custody Sunday after falling asleep in a stolen vehicle outside a convenience store near 42nd and Valley Streets in Omaha.
Officer Michael Pecha, an Omaha police spokesman, said Aaron C. Whitehill, 31, of Bellevue was arrested on suspicion of theft and failure to appear in court in another case. He was taken to the Douglas County Correctional Center.
Pecha said police and fire personnel were called to the Bucky's at 3435 S. 42nd St. about 6:30 a.m. to investigate someone asleep in a Chevrolet Trailblazer. Firefighters told police that when they tried to wake up Whitehill, who was in the driver's seat of the running vehicle, he stepped on the gas and crashed into merchandise in front of the store.
Whitehill was checked out at the Nebraska Medical Center before being booked into jail. The Chevrolet was determined to have be stolen in La Vista.
