A 52-year-old Florida man is accused of abducting and raping a 13-year-old Omaha girl after meeting her online and luring her away from her middle school.
Terry Alan Turner of Arcadia, Fla., picked up the girl from Morton Middle School in northwest Omaha on Thursday morning, Omaha police said. The two had been communicating online for several weeks.
The girl’s parents were alerted to the abduction when school officials called to ask why the girl was absent from school.
At about 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Omaha police notified the Lafayette County Sheriff’s Office that Turner and the girl could be traveling through western Missouri on the way back to Florida. That night, Lafayette County Sheriff’s deputies spotted Turner’s vehicle parked next to a pond along a county road south of Interstate 70 near Odessa, which is just east of Kansas City.
Turner was arrested and charged with statutory rape, statutory sodomy and child kidnapping. He remained in the Lafayette County Jail Monday on $100,000 bail. Omaha authorities said they are considering filing charges in Nebraska against Turner.
The girl has been returned to her parents, Omaha police said.
Turner’s movements were tracked through the combined efforts of Omaha police, the Lafayette County Sheriff’s Office and the Western Missouri Cyber Crimes Task Force.
