DUBUQUE, Iowa (AP) — A Manchester teenager has agreed to plead guilty to two charges of first-degree murder, suddenly ending a trial in Dubuque.
Isaiah Sweet, 18, agreed to the deal Monday and calmly confessed his guilt in the May 2012 killings of his grandparents, Richard Sweet, 55, and Janet Sweet, 62.
Judge Michael Shubatt told Sweet that first-degree murder is punishable by up to life imprisonment without parole. Sweet said he understood.
Sweet’s guilty plea followed the playing of a taped interview in which Sweet recalled kissing his grandparents after shooting them and apologizing before fleeing.
