Robert W. Grant stabbed his on-again, off-again girlfriend 46 times, then tried to skip town without his T-shirt that read “Almost Single,” Douglas County authorities said Wednesday.
Grant, 32, is accused of killing Trudy McKee, 43, at the Blossoms Apartments, 9805 Park Drive, on Sept. 17. Douglas County Judge Jeffrey L. Marcuzzo ruled Wednesday that there is enough evidence to try Grant for first-degree murder.
Omaha police detective Thomas Queen testified that Grant occasionally stayed with McKee, a registered nurse, at the apartment she shared with her teenage daughter. All three lived in Wichita, Kan., until earlier this year.
McKee's daughter told police that before she left for school, she saw her mother and Grant asleep in bed. She returned home about 3:30 p.m. to discover her mother's body inside the master bedroom.
“She was screaming that her mother was dead,” Queen testified. “She was visibly upset, shaking, crying.”
A neighbor told police that she heard a woman's “bloodcurdling scream” in the morning, but she did not call police.
Police found a duffel bag of clothes and shoes at the apartment that appeared to be blood-stained. Tests later showed it was McKee's, Queens said. Police also found the “Almost Single” T-shirt that McKee's daughter identified as Grant's.
Grant was arrested by Omaha police later in the day after he boarded a Chicago-bound bus without buying a ticket. During questioning, police noticed a spot of blood on Grant's shoes. The blood tested positive for McKee's DNA, Queen said.
A murder weapon has not been found.
