Omaha Westside gave up 27 straight points to host Papillion-La Vista South in the middle two quarters Friday night, but recovered for a 42-27 victory for the District 2 football championship.
The No. 6 Warriors (8-1) began their 28-point fourth quarter with a 4-yard touchdown run from Lane Yates. He then threw to Malek Pittman for an 18-yard touchdown pass, and quarterback Christian Hagan’s extra-point kick gave Westside the lead for good at 28-27.
Drew Fitzmorris finished the scoring for Westside as he scored on a 4-yard run and a 20-yard pass from Hagan, who threw for three touchdowns.
Hagan’s first two scoring passes were 17 yards to Jamaal Conway-Smith and 22 yards to Luke Biggs, both in the opening quarter. Fitzmorris set up the second score with an interception. He returned it for a touchdown, but it was called back by a penalty.
Papio South got three touchdowns from Class A’s No. 2 rusher, Drew Klein, and quarterback Gabe Smallwood also scored for the playoff-bound Titans (5-4).
Westside had stopped the Titans’ first scoring threat on a fumble that was recovered at the Warrior 1, but Hagan fumbled on the next play and Jeremy Kowalski fell on the ball for the Titans at the 3.
Klein needed three tries to cover the 3 yards, scoring with 6:52 left in the first half.
Smallwood scored with 45 seconds left in the half on a sneak that ended a 68-yard drive, but the Titans couldn’t get the tying extra point as the snap went awry.

Papillion-La Vista 22, Millard South 19
At Buell Stadium, the No. 7 Monarchs (6-3) ended Millard South’s run of 11 consecutive playoff appearances.
The Patriots (3-6) led 17-14 at halftime on a Scott Botkin field goal and added two points when Brad Kielty sacked Alec Ditoro in the end zone for a safety early in the third quarter.
“I thought they played well,” Papio coach Jeff Govier said. “They kept the ball quite a bit and we didn’t get as many snaps as we’re used to.
“Our defense got a couple stops and finally we made a couple plays.”
Papio’s winning touchdown came on a quick-strike drive midway through the final quarter.
Reid Matthias took a short pass from Ditoro 49 yards before being tackled by Millard South’s Anthony Cloyd. A couple plays later, Ditoro hit Matthias with a pass in the back of the end zone with 6:30 left in the game. Ditoro ran for the two-point conversion for a three-point lead.
Millard South reached the Monarchs’ 36 before stalling on its next drive, and Botkin’s 52-yarder into a light breeze was short.
Papio ran out all but the final 35 seconds of the game, with Sean VanBriesan’s punt pinning the Patriots at their 5 with no timeouts left.
Ditoro passed for 165 yards and two touchdowns while Matthias had 114 yards receiving and two touchdowns on nine catches. Cloyd had 75 yards rushing on 25 carries.
