Seed gathering: Wachiska Audubon of Lincoln needs help at 1 p.m. today harvesting seeds from thickspike gayfeather — common names for the plant are prairie blazing star, tall blazing star or Kansas gayfeather. The harvested seed and chaff will be taken to Stock Seed Farm near Murdock, Neb., for cleaning. Wachiska receives $50 a pound for the seed. The group has received as much as $5,275 for an afternoon’s harvest. To reach the harvest area, drive west on Lincoln’s O Street (U.S. Highway 6) to the Pleasant Dale Cemetery, which is six miles west of Emerald or one mile past the roundabout. Turn right (north) on West 168th Street and drive about halfway down the hill. Turn left (west) onto the lane by a blue 915 sign. Bring leather gloves, if possible, to protect the hands while working, and 5-gallon buckets if you have them. Water and soft drinks will be available.
Hospice workers: Pathways to Compassion Hospice seeks caring individuals to make a difference in the lives of hospice patients and their families by becoming a supportive addition to the hospice team. Tax-time help: The Omaha Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) Coalition still needs volunteers for the 2014 tax season. Volunteer site navigators are needed to staff the seven Volunteer Income Tax Assistance sites and various mobile locations in the Omaha area to welcome customers, conduct client in-take and coordinate other services offered through the tax sites. These include financial education seminars, opening bank accounts and credit reporting. The EITC Coalition coordinates the VITA program for the Internal Revenue Service in Omaha. Volunteers need not have any prior tax preparation training or experience. The coalition’s training program is comprehensive. A 24-hour time commitment per month is required after the training. VITA sites are open from Jan. 27, 2014, through April 15, 2014. Volunteer orientation will be offered at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Family Housing South Omaha, 3605 Q St. Contact the coalition at 402-250-9781 or visit fhasinc.org for more information and an application.
