Omaha Brownell-Talbot’s offense isn’t designed for quick scores.
But that’s what the Raiders got twice Thursday night to get past Yutan 16-0 in the first round of the Class C-2 playoffs.
“We’re not Oregon, we’re Stanford,” Brownell-Talbot coach Mike Mancuso said.
The unbeaten Raiders threw one pass in the second half.
Brownell-Talbot (9-0) built a 10-0 lead on a 56-yard, first-half touchdown by its leading rusher, 138-pound Arlie Myers, and a third-quarter Dylan Burkley field goal. Fullback Jonathan Vrana popped a trap play for a 57-yard touchdown with 8:14 left to make it 16-0.
“Their outside linebacker, Nate Fisher, was coming hard all night,” Mancuso said. “We thought if he kept coming, we could hit a trap and there would be nobody left back there.”
Myers ran for a game-high 165 yards, including 98 in the first half.
It was the Raiders’ first playoff win in six seasons in 11-man competition — they previously were in eight-man — and kept them undefeated in six night games the past two years at their Skutt Field.
“We played pretty tight the first half. We hadn’t been here in a while,” Mancuso said. “I knew tonight would be a lot like this from the first time we played (a 22-6 win) and from the films.
“They fly to the ball on defense, and we thought we would have to grind it out on offense.”
The Raiders started the game with a long drive that took about nine minutes, but the Chieftains held on downs.
Yutan (3-6), which was trying for its first playoff win in nine tries dating to 1989, advanced to the Raiders 32 late in the third quarter but got no farther. On fourth-and-10, Brownell-Talbot senior Will Haskell recovered a fumble for a 5-yard loss.
The Raiders will host Centennial, which defeated Elmwood-Murdock 42-7, in Wednesday’s second round.
