An 18-year-old Omahan has been critically injured in a single-vehicle traffic accident near Florence Boulevard and Maple Street.
Police said Jeremy Belback was taken to Creighton University Medical Center in critical condition after the crash Saturday at 11:20 p.m.
Authorities said their investigation found that the 1995 Chevrolet pickup truck that Belback was driving had been stolen in Council Bluffs.
Police said the pickup was northbound in the southbound lane of Florence Boulevard from Lake Street at a high rate of speed when it traveled over a curb at Florence Boulevard and Ohio Street, striking a traffic-control sign. The pickup continued north, drifted to the west and traveled over another curb where it struck a wooden utility pole. The pickup then struck a tree and went airborne before rolling several times. The truck came to rest on its side at 2809 Florence Blvd.
Belback, who was not wearing a seat belt, was alone in the pickup and was ejected during the crash, police said.
Belback's injuries were considered life-threatening by rescue-squad personnel.
Police said speed was being investigated as a contributing factor in the crash.
The accident remains under investigation, Omaha police said, and Council Bluffs authorities have been notified of the pickup's theft.
