Kokesh, Sueflohn, Kolb among wrestlers earning wins against teammates

Three Huskers who qualified for the NCAA nationals last season picked up victories Friday night during Nebraska’s annual wrestle-offs.

Junior Robert Kokesh, who placed third at nationals last season, made one appearance at 174 pounds, winning a 17-2 technical fall over McCoy Newberg. Kokesh also was impressive last weekend when he won his weight division at the Daktronics Open in Brookings, S.D.

Jake Sueflohn, who was one win away from placing at nationals last season, earned a pin over Luis DeAnda in 2:47 at 149. Destin McCauley, another wrestler looking to earn the spot at 149, pinned Gage Anderson in 41 seconds.

At 197, Caleb Kolb, another returning NCAA qualifier, edged Spencer Johnson twice by 3-2 decisions — one in double overtime and also in triple overtime.

In another tight weight class, Aaron Studebaker and TJ Dudley split their matches against each other at 184. Studebaker won the first 4-2 before Dudley took the second 6-5. Dudley also decisioned Studebaker 9-4 last weekend in South Dakota.

They are looking for the upper hand in a weight division that also includes newcomer Pat Downey, who has been banged up early in the season.

At 125 pounds, redshirt freshman Tim Lambert defeated Shawn Nagel twice, winning the first by pin in 4:52 and the second by technical fall, 18-0.

At 133 pounds, Colton McCrystal put together a pair of victories. McCrystal took down Ben Morgan, 6-1, before defeating Eric Montoya, 7-4. Morgan had placed third at the Daktronics Open.

Micah Barnes (165) won both of his matches, defeating Brandon Wilbourn by injury default and outlasting Ian Ousley 12-3. At 157 pounds, John Svoboda picked up a pair of wins as James Green, who placed seventh at nationals last season, didn’t compete.

The heavyweights battled once on Friday night, with Nyle Bartling notching an injury default victory over Collin Jensen. And at 141 pounds, Anthony Abidin pinned Adam Joseph in 1:27 following Joseph’s 5-3 decision over Tyrell Galloway.

The wrestle-offs took place at the Devaney Center, which is Nebraska’s new home this season after competing at the Coliseum in past years. Nebraska’s first dual of the season will be next Sunday at Devaney when the seventh-ranked Huskers face No. 17 Northwestern.
