The UNO men’s soccer team hosts IPFW at 4 p.m. Sunday at Caniglia Field in the final Summit League match for both squads.
The Mavericks are 4-9-1 and fifth in the Summit at 2-3. UNO still has a chance to finish as high as third in the final standings but will need a win Saturday and some help along the way.
UNO’s Christian Garcia had two goals and one assist at Eastern Illinois last Sunday and was the Summit’s offensive player of the week. He joins teammates Chava Garcia and Vance Rookwood as recipients of the award this season. Rookwood and Christian Garcia have a team-high three goals apiece, while Chava Garcia has a team-best nine points (2 goals, 5 assists).
The Mavericks have had no trouble creating shots — they’re first in the league with 15.9 per game. However, UNO’s outburst Sunday was just the second time they’ve hit three goals this season.
IPFW enters the match 1-14-1 and 1-4 in the league. The Mastodons are eliminated from contention for the Summit League tournament. IPFW is led by Oscar Uyamadu, who has a team-high five goals and 10 points.
The Mavs are 0-2 all time against the Mastodons. IPFW knocked off UNO 1-0 last year in Fort Wayne.
