Two people were killed and two were wounded in a fight and shooting late Thursday night at a house in Sioux City.
One of the wounded, Juan Nino-Estrada of Sioux City, has been charged with two counts of first-degree and one count of second-degree murder.
The names of the dead were not released Friday, pending notification of relatives.
Nino-Estrada, 26, had visited the house at 507 W. 27th St. several times Thursday, according to police.
Late that night he returned to the house, carrying a 9 mm pistol, said Sioux City Police Department spokesman Lt. Mark Kirkpatrick.
“There was a disturbance between him and one of the victims,” Kirkpatrick said. “The argument escalated to a physical (confrontation), and shots were fired.”
Authorities were called to the home just west of Hamilton Boulevard in north central Sioux City at 11:59 p.m. Thursday. A day later, investigators were still sorting out what happened.
Nino-Estrada shot and killed a man and a woman at the home, Kirkpatrick said.
The surviving victim, Luis Sanchez, was shot and stabbed, according to court documents. Kirkpatrick said police recovered a large knife at the scene.
At some point during the struggle, Nino-Estrada was shot in his right leg, apparently with the gun he used on the other three.
Police believe drugs were involved in the slayings, but Kirkpatrick would not elaborate.
Nino-Estrada left the house after the fight and was found by authorities elsewhere in Sioux City. They took him to a local hospital for his gunshot wound.
On Friday, Nino-Estrada made his initial appearance in District Court for Woodbury County. Bond was set at $2 million, according to court documents. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Nov. 18.
