Vance Rookwood’s goal off a corner kick with 6:26 left gave UNO a 2-1 win Saturday over Incarnate Word on Senior Day at Caniglia Field.
The Mavs (6-9-1) took the lead early in the game when senior Craig Buettner stole the ball off a defender’s foot and finished from 22 yards out, his third goal of the season.
Incarnate Word (6-8-1), another a school transitioning to Division I, tied the game in the 40th minute when Dylan Kelly scored after a free kick was played into the box.
But in the 84th minute, Chava Garcia’s corner kick found Rookwood in the center of the box six yards from the goal, and he volleyed it into the left corner. The goal was Rookwood’s fourth of the season and Garcia’s team-high sixth assist.
Each team took 13 shots, while UNO had seven corner kicks to Incarnate Word’s four.
UNO goalie Matt Grosey made three saves to pick up the win.
The Mavericks’ win total was the highest in the program’s three-year history.
Buettner, Grosey and Thomas Torres were the team’s only seniors.
