LINCOLN — The Nebraska women’s gymnastics team continues preparations for the 2014 season with an intrasquad meet on Friday at 6 p.m.
The event will be held at Mabel Lee Hall and is free of charge to the public.
Nebraska will perform routines on every event in Olympic order, beginning with vault and proceeding to uneven bars, balance beam and floor exercise. Free team schedule cards will be available to fans, and the Huskers will sign autographs following the meet.
The Huskers return seven letterwinners from last year’s squad that took its second consecutive Big Ten Championship title.
NU will feature three gymnasts that have combined for 14 All-America honors during their career, including seniors Emily Wong, Jamie Schleppenbach and junior Jessie DeZiel. Returners Jennifer Lauer, Desire’ Stephens, Hollie Blanske, Amanda Lauer, and Madison McConkey, will add talent and depth to the Husker’s roster this season.
The Big Red will also welcome back two redshirt freshman — Ariel Martin and Jordyn Beck, who did not compete due to injuries last season. Freshmen Jennie Laeng and Ashley Lambert have joined the team.
“It is a good casual event because it is in our own gym,” coach Dan Kendig said, “It will give us a pretty good preview of what to expect this year. And my expectations for this season are big. They are always the same: to be the best in the Big Ten conference, and make our way to the Super Six. We have our starting point and now just have to get better every day.”
Nebraska will open their schedule on Jan. 11 at 6 p.m. at the newly renovated Devaney Center against Northern Illinois. The Huskers will host four other regular-season home meets against, Minnesota (Feb. 1), Michigan (Feb. 14), Arkansas (March 8) and the annual Masters Classic on Sunday, Feb. 23 against Kentucky, Wisconsin-Stout, and Bridgeport.
