After sweeping then-No. 8 Miami (Ohio) last weekend, the UNO hockey team is ranked in both national polls for the first time this season.
The Mavericks are No. 15 in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine top 15, and are No. 17 in the weekly top 20 poll from USCHO.com.
The Mavs had received votes in both polls several times during the season before breaking into both polls’ rankings.
UNO (8-6-0 overall, first in the National Collegiate Hockey Conference at 5-1-0) beat Miami 6-3 and 3-1 to cap a grueling schedule in November during which it went 6-2-0. In addition to the wins over Miami, the Mavericks also swept Denver on the road and earned home splits with then-No. 10 North Dakota and then-No. 2 Michigan.
The Mavs jumped from No. 34 to No. 18 in the PairWise rankings, which simulate the computer formula used to help pick the 16-team NCAA tournament field.
Also, Ryan Massa was named the National Collegiate Hockey Conference’s goaltender of the week on Monday.
Massa backstopped both wins by the Mavericks last weekend as they knocked off then-No. 8 Miami, 6-3 and 3-1. The junior from Littleton, Colo. made 29 saves and allowed just one even-strength goal in Friday’s series opener. The next night, he allowed just one power-play goal on 26 shots as the Mavs earned their second series sweep of the year.
Massa has won his last five starts, allowing only 10 goals – including just three even-strength goals. During his streak he has posted a 1.99 goals-against average and a .934 save percentage. At 5-2-0 for the season, his winning percentage of .714 ranks second in the NCHC.
