Graphic: The pickup sales war
Pickup truck sales have been outpacing car sales this year.
Nationwide, pickup truck sales are up about 13 percent over October 2012. Overall, U.S. total automotive sales are up “10 to 12 percent” over last year, said Scott Ghedine of Automotive News.
Consumers, especially Midwestern consumers, “who use trucks in their work have held off buying, and now they have the money or the incentives to buy,” Ghedine said.
The recent introduction of the redesigned 2014 Chevrolet Silverado and 2014 GMC Sierra has motivated other brands to add attractive incentives, including rebates or financing deals, to their 2013 pickup models. This late in the year, however, some dealers say they are low on stock or are sold out of specific 2013 pickups.
Checks with local dealers indicated incentives are continuing with many 2014 models.
In October, pickup truck sales occupied the top three slots on the top 10 vehicle sales chart. Lower sales of the Toyota Camry and higher sales of Dodge Ram pickups pushed Dodge Ram into third place, up from fourth place in September.
Among October's top 10 sellers, 44 percent — 136,309 of the 308,172 sold — were pickup trucks, according to Automobile Magazine. October sales of the new Chevrolet Silverado showed the largest one-month gain, rising to 42,660, a 30 percent increase over September's sales of 32,506.
