Nightlife opportunities get a bit sparse way out west. Around block 180, Two Fine Irishmen Bar & Grill is a leisure oasis for beer-thirsty suburbanites.
A Friday night visit to see cover band Lemon Fresh Day revealed a packed house at the sprawling sports bar. The dance space was one heckuva Husker party, with fans still in their game gear grooving away their sorrows from the day's loss.
Open since 2007, Two Fine Irishmen bills itself as the “Ultimate Irish Pub,” but don't expect authenticity. The place vibrates more on a sports bar level, with the occasional decorative shamrock and a semi-Irish menu (churros made the cut; Tuesday taco night did not).
Aside from that, the place should appeal to a variety of guests — eaters, drinkers, dancers, sports fans, cards sharks and more. Even snugglers get reeled in by the increasingly rare arcade photo booth nestled by a central fireplace and a surrounding sofa set that's just right for a winter's night. Play some slow jams on the jukebox, and you've got sports bar romance like none other.
With bar seating, high top cocktail tables and large party seating, it's a place for all parties, big and small. The inclusion of a “Wee Folks” menu suggests a family-friendly atmosphere during family appropriate hours.
Not so family-friendly, but quite amusing, is your option to hear a dirty limerick when you call in and press 5 on your phone. Best darn thing I've ever heard on an outgoing message.
The Irishmen's variety of bar games will delight any connoisseur. Choose among pool, darts, Golden Tee, Keno and a punching bag arcade game. Most interesting is a Beer Ball machine, never before seen by this nightlife veteran. It is essentially Skee Ball, only instead of lousy sawdust-stuffed animals, you win beer and appetizers if you score high enough. Which none of us did. Until next time, Beer Ball.
If you have the discipline to watch the clock, Irishmen is a bargain. The bar and grill cultivates a spirited neighborhood happy hour from 3 to 7 p.m. weekdays (and all day on Tuesdays) with great discounts to stretch your drinkin' money. Dollar pints and $7 buckets of bottles, plus drink and shot specials? It's time to toast like it's 1987. Noteworthy food specials include buy one get one free burgers on Mondays, dollar tacos on Wednesdays and $5 nachos on Sundays.
And, as the Irish love to sway to the music, live bands await three nights a week. Acoustic sounds Thursdays, and good ol' rock music Friday and Saturday nights — and no cover charge for one lick of it. This week's line-up features acoustic country music by John Ward tonight, Citrus Club on Friday and the Personics on Saturday — both Top 40 cover bands.
Additional weekly events include Texas Hold 'em tournaments on Tuesdays (7 and 9:45 p.m.) with glorious per person payouts. Wednesdays host Tacos and Trivia night (8:30 p.m.). Prizes go to the top three teams, as if the $1 tacos weren't prize enough!
And there is plenty of room in that giant space to house a pack of football fans on Sundays, Monday nights and Husker Saturdays.
