'Tis the season for holiday-themed fun runs.
There are several races this weekend, but runners will have more than shin splints to contend with. Freezing temperatures are in the weekend forecast.
The U.S. Climate Prediction Center says the odds favor colder than normal weather across Nebraska and Iowa through at least Dec. 16. Normal highs are in the upper 30s with lows around 20 degrees.
Despite the chill factor, event organizer Danielle Kleber is expecting more than 200 runners at the Jingle Bell Run in Papillion on Saturday.
Shadow Lake Towne Center is hosting the third annual event. The 5K benefits the Papillion-La Vista Health Systems Academy, a program for high school students for those interested in working in the medical field. Registration is closed. Click here for more information.
The Arthritis Foundation is hosting two runs this weekend – one in Council Bluffs on Saturday and another in Lincoln on Sunday. There are 5K and 10K routes to choose from at the Council Bluffs event. Lincoln's race is a 5K. Register for either in person on race day for $35.
The Holiday Lights Fun Run is Sunday. The Omaha Running Club puts on the free event. The 4-mile route, which starts at 10th and Harney Streets, winds through downtown Omaha. Be there at 6 p.m. Munch on cookies and sip hot chocolate after the run.
Whichever race you choose, pile on the scarves and layer your ugly Christmas sweaters.
