A funeral Mass will begin at 11 a.m. today for Sister Consolata Sonka of Omaha, a Notre Dame nun for 73 years.
Sonka celebrated her 100th birthday Nov. 19 at Immanuel Fontenelle Home. She died there Monday from complications of pneumonia, said Sister Margaret Hickey.
Sonka's funeral will be at the Notre Dame Convent Chapel, 3501 State St.
For 54 years, Sonka was an educator in Nebraska, Iowa and South Dakota. She served these Nebraska schools: Notre Dame Academy in Omaha, Assumption in Omaha, St. Wenceslaus in Dodge, St. John Nepomucene (now called Howells Community Catholic School) in Howells and St. John Neumann in Clarkson.
She taught students dances of various kinds in addition to academic subjects. She learned to paint with oil and acrylic, to knit and to do quilling — skills she also shared with students. She retired in 1994.
Brighton Gardens of Omaha recognized her as Volunteer of the Year after five years of visiting residents to pray the rosary with them.
Born Joanne Elizabeth Sonka, she grew up in Minnesota and Iowa. Survivors include a sister, Theresa Ballard of Portland, Ore.
