Omaha's recent spell of bitterly cold weather is taking a toll on garbage collection in the city.
Marty Grate, the city's environmental services manager, said Friday that a few areas that receive Deffenbaugh garbage service pickup on Thursday were missed due to cold conditions. The weather slowed workers' collection efforts, Grate said.
“It's (cold) hard on equipment,'' he said, “and it's hard on workers.''
About 80 percent to 90 percent of Deffenbaugh customers' waste was collected Thursday, he said.
“There are some delays out there,'' he said.
Grate urged Omahans to leave their garbage at curbside at their normal times because Deffenbaugh workers will catch up. He said collection would continue Saturday morning if workers are still behind schedule at the end of the day Friday.
