SIOUX CITY, Iowa — Top-ranked University of Texas at Brownsville ended Midland’s run at the NAIA volleyball tournament Friday.
The Ocelots defeated the Warriors 25-20, 25-14, 21-25, 25-11.
“I’m so proud of what this team has accomplished this year,” coach Paul Giesselmann said. “I don’t like losing in any fashion, but what tremendous team effort by our girls this year. Brownsville has an incredible program and there’s a reason they are the best in the nation.
“We’re really going to miss our seniors next year. Becca (Gradoville) was really a true leader on and off the court. Krista (Hermsmeyer) what a class act, you can’t say enough good things about her. Mackenzie (Scheef) an absolutely tremendous volleyball player. She had an All-American type of season.”
The Warriors held their own against a team that had lost five sets all season. Ashlee Harms led the way for Midland with 11 kills. Ashley Wheeler had nine kills and Scheef seven. Megan Farley added 34 assists and Molly Pettit had 20 digs.
Midland went a program-best 37-5 and made it to the quarterfinals of the national tournament for the first time.
Dordt also advanced to the single-elimination portion, but lost to Wayland Baptist 25-17, 26-24, 20-25, 25-23.
