Today is a day for remembering. The reason is best told through the words of those who were there, someone like Omahan Lou Radil, then a 22-year-old sailor aboard the battleship California: “We got a torpedo hit, and then another, and then a bomb hit. We started listing to one side. We got word that the ship was sinking and could capsize. So the captain ordered a call to abandon ship.” Seventy-two years later, the words “Pearl Harbor” still ring like a bell.
