Lincoln’s very own Whole Foods opened today.
Store team leader Renee DeMan said the 35,000-square-foot store at 6055 O St. opened this morning around 8 a.m. with a bread-breaking ceremony, a Whole Foods tradition. DeMan estimated a couple hundred people lined up outside the store and filled the parking lot for this morning’s opening.
The store will feature organic produce, a fresh fish counter, meat counter, a bakery with pastries and breads, a spirits and wine section, an olive bar and cafe seating for about 54 people. Coming soon: An espresso cart, DeMan said.
About 125 people were hired to staff the store. DeMan and about 16 other employees were brought in from other stores.
The Lincoln location is about half the size of Omaha’s Whole Foods, which is a whopping 60,000 square feet.
“We really built it to have the Lincoln community in mind,” DeMan said, with murals depicting Lincoln landmarks including the Haymarket.
